Resilience was inspired by a morning walk near my home, where I often stop at the edge of a small pond to observe the lotus field that rises there each summer. Giant green pads lift themselves above the water like soft stepping stones, and for a brief window of time, lotus blooms open—bright, improbable, and fleeting. Every year, I feel lucky to witness them.

My relationship with this pond is one of appreciation and stewardship. I frequently remove fast-food wrappers, plastic shopping bags, Styrofoam cups, and other traces of human carelessness from its banks. And still, in spite of what is discarded, the lilies rise. They shelter wildlife, catch the light, and offer moments of quiet beauty to anyone willing to pause.

This painting grew from that tension—between damage and persistence, neglect and grace. Thick, layered oil paint was used to echo the physical presence of the lotus leaves and the slow, steady work of growth beneath the surface. The composition holds both weight and openness, inviting the viewer to notice what continues, even when conditions are imperfect.

Resilience is a meditation on endurance—not as hardness, but as the quiet decision to rise again and again. It reflects the way nature persists despite us, and the responsibility we carry to notice, care for, and protect what sustains us.
